We Learn It Too Late
At Super WEgo we believe small, steady acts build stronger neighborhoods. Dr. Gladys McGarey’s life is a living example of that belief: a century of attention, care, and simple practice that shows healing is not a treatment you buy but a way you live.
She says plainly, “All healing comes from inside ourselves.” That sentence lands differently when it’s spoken by someone who has watched a century unfold. Her wisdom is stitched from moments — a child’s glance at Gandhi on a train, decades of tending people, a steady conviction that love is the soil where life opens.
A friend I know tried a simple check‑in at her kitchen table after a day of sledding: a soft object passed around, one question, and ten minutes. The kids named a bird, a funny sound, and a feeling; they laughed at a ridiculous compliment while cocoa steam curled between them. The parent texted me later: “We actually heard each other.” That ordinary evening is the kind of durable change Dr. McGarey points to — not dramatic, not instant, but quietly transformative.
The L's
She names essentials — life paired with love, laughter, labor, listening, and reaching for light — not as rules but as verbs to practice. Love without life is empty; laughter without kindness can wound; work without meaning becomes drudgery; listening without care is noise. When these things move together, ordinary days become the slow work of healing.
Her voice is persuasive because it’s humble. She doesn’t promise miracles. She points to the everyday acts of care.
In a world that prizes speed, Dr. McGarey’s century of practice reminds us that the things we learn “too late” — how to listen, how to laugh kindly, how to make work meaningful — are the things that make life worth living. Love, she says, is the essence of healing. We’d do well to start believing her.
She has numerous videos on YouTube. I shared one below. If you want to learn more from Dr. McGarey she also published a book with Dr. Mark Hyman in 2023 titled, "The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age."
